Call for Director Nominations & Notice of Annual General Meeting

 

The Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce (the “Chamber”) is seeking applicants (6) to be directors on the Chamber's Board for a 2-year term commencing May 21, 2025.

The Chamber has been supporting business and strengthening our community since 1906. We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life by actively supporting business, economic growth, and diversification and exists to help businesses reach their potential. As the convenor and catalyst for a vibrant business community, the Chamber builds strength and resilience among its members, advocates to all levels of government to ensure businesses can succeed and works to position our community as a magnet for talent and opportunity. The Board of Directors is a governance Board and we seek new directors who are able to provide strategic insight in support of our vison and mission to advance a prosperous Community.

Every year, we seek to ensure our Board of Directors is representative of our membership and the increasingly diverse business community. We are inviting applications from all Chamber members, especially individuals with the following expertise:

Board Governance
Expertise in leading or participating in boards, with a clear understanding of board responsibilities, fiduciary duties, governance structures, policy development, and oversight practices that ensure accountability and strategic alignment.


Industry
Direct experience and knowledge of a the oil and gas industry or sector, including market dynamics, operational challenges, emerging trends, and opportunities. This insight supports informed decision-making and relevance in Chamber initiatives.


Government Relations
Ability to navigate relationships with all levels of government, including advocacy, policy development, lobbying, and stakeholder engagement. Understanding of legislative processes and how public policy impacts the business community.


Accounting and Finance
Competence in financial reporting, budgeting, auditing, and analysis, with the ability to interpret financial data and ensure fiscal responsibility. This includes knowledge of accounting standards and financial oversight best practices.


Technology / E-commerce
Understanding of digital platforms, data systems, cybersecurity, online business models, and technology trends that impact commerce. This includes experience leveraging technology to improve efficiency, service delivery, or member engagement.


Procurement / Supply Chain
Knowledge of sourcing, purchasing, logistics, vendor management, and supply chain operations. Ability to identify efficiencies, mitigate risk, and ensure sustainable and ethical procurement practices.


Land Development / Leasing / Construction / Real Estate
Expertise in land use, property development, commercial leasing, or real estate investment. Understanding of zoning, permitting, infrastructure planning, and market considerations relevant to development projects.


Fundraising
Proven ability to raise funds through sponsorships, grants, campaigns, or philanthropic networks. This includes donor stewardship, partnership cultivation, and strategic planning to support organizational growth and sustainability.

Furthermore, applicants to be on the Chamber Board should:

  • Be purpose-driven, with a strategic perspective
  • Possess senior executive leadership experience
  • Be committed to the Chamber and its purpose
  • Have board governance experience
  • Be financially literate

Applications are open from March 31, 2025 to April 25, 2025. You must sign and submit a Board of Directors Application form, along with your photo, bio/resume/CV and a link to your LinkedIn or online profile no later than 4PM, April, 2025 by e-mail to: ed@fortmcmurraychamber.ca  Both the nominating organization and the nominated organization  must be a Chamber member in good standing to apply.

This year's Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 beginning at 5:00 PM MST. Advance registration is required to participate.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Brian Jean

Minister of Energy and Minerals & MLA Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche

Brian Jean was sworn in as the Minister of Energy and Minerals on June 9, 2023. He previously served as the Minister of Jobs, Economy and Northern Development.

Prior to his service as an elected official at the provincial level, Mr. Jean was a Member of Parliament from 2004 to 2014 where he served as the Parliamentary Secretary to 3 different Ministers of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. He has also previously dedicated 11 years to private legal practice as partner at a large Northern Alberta law firm, primarily as a litigator, and owned several successful small businesses.

Mr. Jean holds a Bachelor of Laws as well as a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Business Administration.

Brian Jean was first elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Fort McMurray-Conklin May 5, 2015, and as the Member for Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche on March 16, 2022 and was re-elected on May 29, 2023.
